Everything and the Space Between

Photo by Casey Horner on Unsplash

The space between wingbeats
carries the sparrow
through the air.

The space between notes
carries the music
to our ear.

The space between words
carries the meaning
to our heart.

The space between breaths
carries us
into the next.

The space between us
carries
possibility.

The space between now and forever
ceases to exist
in the present,

that moment before
the cosmos explodes

becoming everything
and the space between.

A Little Rain Must Fall

Rain on dry earth.
Scent released.

All that has waited
wafts into air.

Ground is pelted
prepared.

The dormant
begins to move.

Soil loosened
seed breaks open.

Life stirs
beneath the surface.

She will emerge
break through

this life. Rise
into the light.

Life Continues for Roger Allen Baut (April 25, 1946 - November 4, 2018)

I imagine you now
a breeze through the trees
you once photographed.

I imagine you now
the air through which
the music you loved vibrates.

I imagine you now
as the breath on which
we speak your name.

I imagine you.
What is remembered lives.

*After I wrote this poem I found the words below on Roger’s Facebook page. The photo above was with those words.

Remember me,
Remember me,
Through all of your eternity,
That I was one,
Who in the Sun
Called to you
Through the rain...

Humming Bird

Photo by Nathan Anderson on Unsplash

The buzz of blowers
impacts my morning,
my mind. And then
the humming birds
come. Rise to my
window and into my
awareness. Their
humming so quiet
it reaches beyond
the roar into some
eternal moment.

Our Heart Our Mother (For Our Lady or Notre Dame)

Our Lady of Paris, icon and soul of a city
we believe we’ll always have.

Flames flicker across screens, across borders
across religions and as always

you are full of grace as nearly a thousand years
of prayers are released.

Smoke rises and lingers over this moment
like incense awaiting more requests.

You were here before cathedrals rose in the
river of our imagination.

You were here before rose windows and spires
that reached into sky.

And still, you are here. You are here, always
our heart, our mother.
